COMPLIMENTARY ROAD RISK ‘HEALTH CHECK’ Following the issue of HSE guidance (ref.INDG382) entitled ‘Driving at work – Managing work-related road safety’ operators should have updated all their relevant documentation and systems to comply with this guidance. This includes their Health & Safety basic statement and full policy document. Recent complimentary audits carried out by Minimise Your Risk, the industry’s leading independent Health & Safety and risk management consultancy, have shown that all bus and coach operators need to review their documentation and processes to ensure that they satisfy the guidance. Alec Horner, Managing Director of Minimise Your Risk states ‘Many bus and coach operators believe that they are doing enough to comply with all regulations and best practice. However, we have yet to find an operator who has scored 100% and everyone who has had the complimentary audit carried out has stated that it has been a useful couple of hours spent reviewing their systems. There has always been something that an operator thought they were covering, but the audit showed they could do more. A good example is licence checks to ensure that drivers are producing their valid licence and not a duplicate, forged or invalid licence. In many cases, smaller operators do not even have a written Health and Safety policy document nor any written risk assessments, which is a legal requirement where there are more than five employees ’ There are also many other implications for not having ‘suitable and sufficient’ risk assessments, which is particularly worrying in the blame and claim culture where the first request will be for risk assessments on the activity the injured person was involved in, be it an employee or a passenger. Training records for all employees are another key requirement. The audit looks at these and other Road Risk issues.
